Ancient yoga books have called Shirshasana (headstand in Sanskrit) the king of all asanas. Why?
At birth, the head normally emerges first, followed by the other limbs. The skull encloses the brain, which governs the nervous system and the sense organs. The brain is the seat of intelligence, knowledge, discrimination, wisdom, and power. It is the seat of Brahman, the soul.

The Bhagavad-Gita states: "Harmony (sattva), activity (rajas), and inertia (tamas), these are the qualities of nature. They quickly bind, O great Arjuna, in this body the spirit, the imperishable—" (XIV, s)
The head is the center of sattva qualities.
